A bespoke staircase renovation can transform a home. This stunning spiral staircase bespoke joinery project was designed and handcrafted by Acorn for a client refurbishing a large timber framed house in Reigate, Surrey.

As part of the substantial renovation, we were commissioned to transform an old, rather tired-looking staircase. The client’s brief requested that we rejuvenate the whole stairway, which was rather dark, uninviting and showing its age.

Made to measure oak and glass staircase
Our solution was to replace the existing stair treads with custom-made solid European Oak treads housed into the central supporting beam. European oak is an extremely high-quality timber with excellent strength and durability. It was also chosen for its beautiful warm tones and fine, distinctive grain. It makes even the simplest stairway luxurious and impressive and its timeless quality means it will never go out of date.

We replaced the old handrail and spindles with bespoke glass balustrading topped with a European Oak handrail to match the treads. The glass enhances the feeling of space and light while allowing the beauty of the oak treads to shine through.

The central pitch pine column was stripped back completely. We then lime washed it to give it a more modern finish, whilst maintaining the character of the wood. We also installed flush wall lights to brighten the treads, accentuate the curves and lines and add a warm, welcoming glow.

This new staircase has an almost sculptural quality and has become a much-loved feature of the house. And we are proud to add this to our gallery of works.
